Gastroenterology Consultation Q & A

What does a gastroenterologist do?

A gastroenterologist is a specialist who has special training in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of medical issues that affect the gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine and rectum. Gastroenterologists perform diagnostic testing as well as procedures to treat a wide range of disorders and diseases.

What will happen during my consultation?

During your consultation, you'll be asked to provide a complete medical history, including a family history that may reveal risk factors for gastrointestinal disease and disorders. You'll also be asked to describe your symptoms and Dr. Sherman will perform an exam, which may include gently palpating your belly to check for signs of pain or bloating. He may also order diagnostic testing to evaluate your symptoms, and he may also provide you with a treatment plan to help relieve or eliminate symptoms.

How does Dr. Sherman diagnose gastrointestinal diseases and conditions?

Dr. Sherman uses the most advanced methods to evaluate symptoms so the best treatment can be used based on your individual needs. These methods can include:

  • stool sample evaluation

  • blood tests

  • diagnostic imaging like x-ray, MRI, ultrasound or CT scan

  • minimally-invasive diagnostic procedures, including endoscopy, colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy to evaluate the upper digestive tract and the large intestine

  • small bowel imaging, which uses special techniques to evaluate issues that may affect your small intestine

What symptoms do gastroenterology issues cause?

Gastroenterology conditions can cause a wide array of symptoms that affect only one part or more than one part of your digestive tract, including:

  • abdominal or belly pain

  • nausea and vomiting

  • fever and chills

  • unintentional weight loss

  • loss of appetite

  • diarrhea

  • bloody bowel movements

  • problems swallowing

  • heartburn

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, you should schedule an evaluation to determine the cause and prevent potentially serious complications.
